Brief Car History:

I’m the second owner of this car; I bought it used in 1991 with 17,000 original miles.  From 1991 to 1998, the car remained stock and served as my daily summer driver.  From 1998 to present the car received several modifications detailed below.  The car has always been garage kept and never driven in the winter.  There is no rust/cancer anywhere on the car.

Engine / Driveline / Performance Mods:

This engine and transmission in this car have been replaced.  In 2001 the original engine retired with 134,000 miles on it.  A replacement engine from a wrecked 1991 GXL model was found that only had 33,000 miles on it.  The engine from the ‘91 was disassembled, Street Ported, and reassembled using new apex seals, side seals, and corner seals.   The oil bypass modification was performed to the eccentric shaft and a new oil pump from a Turbo II RX-7 was installed.  All the intake manifolds were port matched and custom fit.  Blue silicone vacuum lines were installed.

Since the engine is from a 1991 model and the car is a 1986 model, some modifications were done.  An external RPM switch was installed to operate the 6-ports and VDI ports on the newer engine.  (The air pump was retained in order to operate these ports.) The front engine cover from the original engine was used allowing the removal of the 1991 electrical oil metering pump.  The mechanical OMP from the original 1986 engine was retained.  The original throttle body was used along with a brand new Throttle Position Sensor (TPS).

The primary 460cc fuel injectors were cleaned and blue printed during the engine overall.  The secondary fuel injectors were replaced with brand new larger 550cc injectors.  The fuel pump was also upgraded to a Turbo II fuel pump.

The stock air box was removed and replaced with an aftermarket cone filter from RX7.com.  The 6-port sleeves were modified using the Pineapple Racing inserts. The exhaust consists of a port matched Racing Beat Header, Racing Beat Silencer and Racing Beat Mufflers.

Engine management is done by a modified engine control unit and an Apexi Super-AFC.  The modified ECU consists of a performance chip that adjusts the timing, fuel delivery, and raises the fuel cut to 8000 RPM.  The Super-AFC was tuned on August 5th, 2004 at K&D Rotary while on the dyno to ensure proper air-fuel mixture.

The transmission was also replaced with the 5-speed from the 1991 GXL.  It also only had 33,000 miles on it when it was installed.  Currently the transmission and rear differential are filled with Redline Synthetic Oils.  The clutch was also replaced in 2001 with a Racing Beat Street/Strip clutch and pressure plate.  The shifter bushings in the transmission were replaced in 2001.

This exhaust on this car has no catalytic converter so it is not street legal, however the rest of the emissions equipment has been retained.

Suspension:

The suspension was upgraded in 1998-99.  (Approximately 128,000 miles on the body at the time)  The worn stock shocks were replaced with Tokico Illumina 5-Way adjustable shocks.  Turbo II sway bars were installed as an upgrade to the smaller stock bars.  All off the original worn rubber suspension bushings were replaced with polyurethane bushings from Suspension Techniques.

Tires/Rims:

Currently mounted on the car are the 15" Stock Rims BRAND NEW Bridgestone Tires.

Brakes:

The original single piston brakes were replaced with 4-piston brakes from a Turbo II.  The pads are Mazda OEM and have over 70% pad left in them.  The calipers were serviced and painted with high temp silver brake caliper paint.

Interior:

The interior of this car is near perfect.  I have the original factory floor mats that are in excellent condition.  (Not shown in pictures)  The center console plastic was replaced with a more durable piece from an 89-91 RX-7.  The shift boot and e-brake boot are custom made from superior leather with matching silver stitching.  The seats are from an 88 GXL model (adjustable headrests and lumbar support).  The wiper switch, headlights, warning light cluster, clock, logicon, power antenna, and CPU are in perfect working order.  The only blemish is that plastic piece that surrounds the clock has a crack in it.

Exterior:

Updated 1989-91 rear tail lights installed.  Factory Spoiler and Turbo II mirrors installed.  Mirrors are painted body color.  There are two minor body blemishes in the paint.  One is centered in the middle of the hood.  It is a small crease approximately 1.5” long.  The second blemish is in the right rear quarter panel by the fuel fill cap.  This crease is also approximately 1.5” long.  See pictures for details.  Overall the paint is an 8 out of 10.
